Like the instrument he plays, the centuries-old shakuhachi flute, Riley Lee has found
he has staying power. Lee, an Australian esteemed as a dai shihan (grand master)
of the traditional Japanese instrument, found his first audience in the
alternative-health community during the 1980s, when cassettes of his unhurried
explorations of the shakuhachi's broad expressive palette became popular items.
Narada has periodically reissued these evocative works on CD and, considering how
the pace of life has intensified since the music's original release dates, the soothing,
ancient wind that blows through Lee's shakuhachi seems more welcomed and
therapeutic than ever. Buddha's Dream was first released in 1984, and the ethereal
expositions found on it--as hokey as this may sound to the unconverted--effectively
encourage states of introspection and stillness that are a balm to the body and spirit.
Broken into shorter segments than the prolonged improvisations found on such
jewels as Sanctuary and Oriental Sunrise, Buddha's Dream at times involves more
notes and occasionally conveys a stronger hint of mystery than is found on either of
those lovely discs. Still, the same sweetness and gentle spirit radiates in pieces
such as "Return of the Fisherman," "Seabreezes," and "As the Water Flows." A

north with the quarter-tone intervals and the dumbeg, oud, and tamboura of the

This compilation project's official title is already long enough, but for true accuracy it
should read, The Best of Ottmar Liebert's First Two Recordings, Volume 1. Barcelona
Nights strings together the more upbeat and animated selections from his two
earliest recordings, Nouveau Flamenco (his famed debut) and Borrasca (plus one
track, "Festival," from Poets and Angels). The package serves as the first installment
in a two-disc series; the subsequent Surrender to Love will patch together
romantically inclined selections of those early 1990s recordings. It's the same music,
but with different sequencing and different packaging. As such, it offers graceful and
pleasant listening, though the similarity in tempos gives the disc a slightly
homogenous feel. Many like-minded guitarists have traveled the path that Liebert
originally blazed, and Barcelona Nights offers an appealing reminder of the qualities
that elicited such a huge initial reception: nimble, articulate fingerwork; charming,
uncomplicated melodies; and just enough flamenco authenticity to convince maturing
pop listeners that they had discovered something exotic. Highlights include the
beckoning cheer of the well-known title track, and the earnest, uplifting energy of
another early hit, "Heart Still/Beating."

Part of the Sound Healing series from Soundings of the Planet, Tao of Healing teams
flautist Dean Evenson with Li Xiangting, a professor from the Central Conservatory of
Music in Beijing and an authority on the guqin, an ancient seven-string zither from
China. Their collaboration, with barely perceptible support from keyboards, acoustic
guitar (Scott Huckabay) and percussion, is a hushed, serene, and inviting experience
--as soft as the faintest breeze felt on a peaceful, sun-warmed afternoon. Evenson's
meditative flute, which rarely strays from the instrument's comfortable low and middle
ranges, is the disc's prevailing voice, with Xiangting's guqin discreetly supplying
tasteful, angular accents to complement the Western vibe of Evenson's reflective
improvisations. At times, in fact, this calming, slow-go disc (60 minutes in length)
briefly conveys traces of jazz-like harmonics (largely Huckabay's contribution) that
flavors the blissful proceedings with a nice touch of musicality. A slight soundalike
quality might be detected in some tracks, but this is a minor quibble. This is
Evenson's first recording where natural sounds are not included, though the liner
notes assert the mix makes use of "earth resonance frequency" (7.8 hertz), all to
enhance a listener's attainment of an alpha state. Actually, Evenson, Xiangting, and
company do a commendable job of that on their own. A strong choice for
supplementing massage or meditation
